Eleven men have appeared in court after being charged with conspiracy to rob moving HGVs on the motorway network.

Ion Dumitru (22), Marius Caldararu (37), Ionel Ursaru (38), Ionita Caldararu (33), Alin Vaduva (34), Corado Dumitrascu (22), Nicolae Constantin (36), Craisor Mitrache (34), Felix Macelaru (32), Ionut Baboi (27) and Micera Nicusor (28) were all arrested at Keele Services on the M6 last month by the Central Motorway Police.

Staffordshire police said a Citroen Relay van at the service area was found to have a homemade lockable hatch in its roof and on board were several power tools.

The investigation followed an operation carried out in April – called Operation Trivium – tackling foreign national offenders.
It comprised all UK forces, with several national and international agencies and was led by the Association of Chief Police Officers and the European Traffic Police Network.

The men appeared at Stoke on Trent Crown Court last Wednesday (28 May) and all defendants will appear again for a plea and case management hearing on 25 July.
