Pall-Ex backed roadside litter campaign nominated for award

A campaign to tackle roadside litter left by lorry drivers and promoted by Pall-Ex has led to a local authority being shortlisted for a national award.

The pallet network helped create a charter that encouraged HGV drivers to “keep their cabs fab” and a subsequent campaign led to extra bins and more litter picks being placed at laybys and roadsides.

Now North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has been nominated for both a Behaviour Change and an Environmental Health category in a local government achievement awards.

According to a recent Pall-Ex survey carried out on 135 of its drivers, 86% said local authorities needed to do more to combat littering, by providing more bins at laybys and service stations.

“We’re proud that the drivers for our network members take such pride in their lorries and in their jobs, but it is a shame that their good will is being let down by a lack of facilities in some parts of the country,” said Pall-Ex managing director Adrian Russell.

NWLDC councillor Alison Smith said: “Working with lorry drivers, who are often on the road for many hours, means we can educate a huge number of road users, as well as giving them the tools to help them keep our roadsides tidy.”
