More than £3,000 in fines were issued to commercial vehicle drivers during a police operation in Thurrock last month, including fines handed out to drivers of foreign-registered goods vehicles.

A total of 34 vehicles were stopped by officers from Essex police on Wednesday 21 May, attracting fines for offences including exceeding their drivers’ hours and driving overweight vehicles.

Among those fined was the driver of a Spanish-registered van, who had allegedly avoided paying speeding fines issued by Devon and Cornwall police and Thames Valley police. He was ordered to pay four £100 fines.

A Slovakian truck driver was also given a £100 on-the-spot fine for inconsiderate driving in the Dartford Tunnel.

The operation took place as part of a nationwide crackdown on non-compliant operators on 21 May.
