FrontSpeaking of which, don’t miss our exclusive Warehouse Logistics News 2014 World Cup event planner, free with this issue, to help you keep up as the tournament progresses this summer. A double A3 wall chart that looks great on any office or warehouse wall, the World Cup planner is sponsored by Briggs Equipment, the materials handling services specialists, who recently lifted a trophy of their own by winning a key contract from Bibby Distribution.

To keep your eye on the ball in your business, in this issue we have scheduled features on Pallet Networks and Conveying Sortation. “Pallet Networks” reviews the European, UK and regional pallet networks: “Conveying Sortation” covers automated materials handling equipment and IT solutions.

We also have our exclusive “The Warehouse” supplement, an in-depth look at the internal workings of the modern warehouse, including materials handling equipment, storage solutions, planning, lighting, flooring, and the I.T. needed to run the operations. “The Warehouse” also includes independent reports on the state of the industry from the UK trade associations and other industry experts.

As featured on our front cover, the UK grocery industry continues to be a major investor in warehousing and logistics equipment and services. New contract wins from Asda, Prologis and Waitrose have already set the tone for another successful year for Hörmann’s industrial division. The new Waitrose national distribution centre in Milton Keynes being developed by Gazeley, is set to be one of the largest ever constructed in the UK. Hörmann’s projects division is managing the installation of 70 double-deck loading bays on this high-profile site, following work completed for the supermarket at its recently opened Leyland distribution centre.

Hörmann is now working on the new 600,000 sq ft Asda distribution centre in Warrington following successful projects for the retailer at Grangemouth, Rochdale and Avonmouth. As with other Asda sites, the equipment of each loading bay is fully integrated through the control panel. Externally the bays are equipped with wheel locks and a driver button that activates the loading door and bay controls, but only when the driver confirms the vehicle is parked safely and securely in the correct position. Jointly pioneered by Asda and Hörmann, the Asda control sequence was originally adapted to the loading bay panel on site, but the complete integrated panel is now factory manufactured by Hörmann and available as a standard option to all customers for all projects.
