Work begins on new Dartford Crossing gantries

  • 14 May 2014
  • By Robin Meczes

Work begins this evening (14 May) on the installation of five gantries at the Dartford Crossing to support the new Dart Charge remote payment system due to come into operation in October.

The gantries will be installed near the tunnel entrance and on the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge to house signage and vehicle identification equipment.

The work involves diversions from the eastern to western bore of the Dartford Tunnel (northbound) from 8.30pm to 5.30am on 14, 15 and 18 May, with diversions from the western to eastern bore from 9pm to 6am on 16 May. Diversions directing traffic through the eastern bore of the tunnel will be in force on the QEII Bridge (southbound) from 10pm to 5.30am on 19-22 May (inclusive) and on 27-28 May.

The tunnel has a height restriction of 4.8m on the western bore and 5.03m on the eastern bore; overheight vehicles will be diverted via the M25.

In March, the Highways Agency revealed hauliers were likely to see an increase in charges for the crossing once the new free-flow charging scheme comes into effect.
