A21 improvements get green light

Dualling of the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury, described as “one of the worst accident blackspots in the country”, could begin as early as the autumn after the transport secretary gave the go-ahead to the plans.

The long awaited major road scheme is expected to help reduce congestion, traffic jams, pollution and accidents along the busy Kent trunk road.

The Department for Transport announced development work into six road schemes in 2012, with the widening of 2.5 miles of the A21 one of them.

A Public Inquiry followed in 2013 and the transport secretary announced last week (1 May) he was accepting the planning inspector’s recommendations and that work could start later this year.

The main construction could then commence in spring 2015.

Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark said of the A21 at Castle Hill: “This stretch of road is notorious across the South East for its tailbacks, as well as being one of the worst accident blackspots in the country.

“We can now look forward with confidence to an end to constant traffic jams, appalling accidents and the pollution caused by idling engines.”
