Barrie Travis retires from CAP

Rob Smith has been appointed editor of CAP’s Red Book for truck residual prices, replacing Barrie Travis (pictured) who has retired after 11 years in the role.

Smith arrives from rental company Fraikin, where he was the used vehicle sales manager for more than 12 years. He said: “I have long had a close working relationship with CAP and was always confident in its independence and thoroughness. But when I joined the business, the amount of research and data analysis amazed me.

“The aim for perfection in providing accurate and timely values was evident from day one and that approach mirrors my own, so I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Travis joined CAP in 2003 after starting his career in 1962 as a Corporal in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, where he repaired and serviced trucks.

In 1972 he became assistant fleet engineer at Geoffrey Reyner Transport in Manchester, and in 1978 joined Barton Commercials in Stockport. Here he launched a sales operation, buying and selling used trucks as well as overseeing the repair side of the business.

He joined Daf dealer Chatfields in 1994 as used commercial sales manager, and his reputation for developing sales operations resulted in him being headhunted by Lancashire Daf and then Renault UK dealer Woodwards of Wigan.

“I have warned everyone – I might find hosting Tupperware parties and playing my Who records isn’t enough to keep me occupied,” he said, “so this probably won’t be the last the industry sees of me.”
