Montracon builds 20 refrigerated LSTs for ACS&T

Montracon has built 20 refrigerated longer semi-trailers with command twin-rear-steer axles for food transport company ACST Logistics.

Operators specifying dry freight and refrigerated LSTs have almost exclusively chosen a twin-bogie axle and a separate rear-steer, which is cheaper and lighter.

The operator specified the Tridec command steering system on the 15.65m trailer, which was exhibited on the Montracon stand at the CV Show, to meet specific operational needs.

ACST Logistics wanted to distribute its load more evenly with more weight through the kingpin and at the back of the trailer, explained Montracon sales engineering manager Dave Doonan.

The company bought six of these trailers 18 months ago to work on its McCain contract, and has now ordered another 14.

He said there is a weight penalty. “The tare weight of the trailer is 10,500kg, which is 1,900kg more than a 13.6m long fridge trailer.

However, the benefits of weight distribution and zero scrub on the tyres when the trailer turns means the service life of tyres is much longer,” he added.

The single-deck LST is 4.2m high, runs on BPW axles with disc brakes and it is fitted with a Carrier Vector 1950 refrigeration unit.
