Council fined £20,000 after pensioner killed by reversing truck

Glasgow City Council has been fined £20,000 after a pensioner died when he was struck by a reversing truck.

In a Health and Safety Executive prosecution, Glasgow Sheriff Court was told Malcolm McCulloch, 71, from Glasgow, was walking across Holm Street when he was struck by the lorry in August 2012. He suffered severe chest and pelvic injuries and died in hospital.

The council had introduced a programme of reversing assistant training between March and December 2011. However, neither the driver nor the labourer involved in the accident had taken reversing assistant training.

A reversing assistant should have been used to guide the driver. The council pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
