Smith Bros’ modern classic trucks to go under the hammer at Tip-Ex

The legendary Smith Bros’ collection of modern-day classic trucks will be entered into the auction taking place at Tip-Ex 2014 in Harrogate.

Steve Smith, director of the Widnes-based used truck dealer, has reluctantly taken the decision to sell the eight trucks.

“[My brother] Mike said he was getting too old to mess about with the trucks, so we took the decision to put them into the auction,” he said.

The trucks include four Volvos (an F10, two F88s and an F86), two Scanias (143 Streamline and 111) a Daf 3300 and an ERF A-series. He recently sold two other classics: an AEC Mandator to haulier Alan Hingley, and a Volvo F89 to Geoff Gilbert, the retired boss of Geoff Gilbert International Transport in Lincolnshire.

The pull of a modern-day classic truck is often linked back to the days when many people drove them for living. Smith favours Volvos for that very reason.

“People want trucks that they used to own and drive,” he said. “I’ll be sad to see them go; every one of those trucks has a story behind it.”

The auction, hosted by Charlie Wright, MD of Protruck Auctions, will take place at the Great Yorkshire Showground on 29 May, the opening day of the three-day show.

“Part of the sale will be dedicated to the modern-day classic trucks to celebrate the golden years of haulage,” he said.

Smith previously sold four modern-classics, an ERF, a Scania 111 and a couple of Volvos though Protruck Auctions in 2008.
