EP to debate on compulsory alcolocks

  • 20 April 2014
  • By Hayley Pink

The European Parliament’s (EP) Transport Committee is planning to debate whether alcolocks should be made compulsory for all new trucks.

According to a new EP study, drink-driving is responsible for 25% (7,000 casualties) of EU road incidents, although drink is only a factor in up to 3.3% of CV crashes. The EP is considering three scenarios for legislation: a rehabilitation programme for drink-driving offenders; mandatory preventative use; or voluntary preventative use.

The cost of an alcolock is estimated at around €1,200 (£989), with €150 for installation. However, when the cost is balanced against road safety benefits, calculations suggest it would not be economical to fit the systems across all CVs, but would provide a break-even cost benefit on HGVs and buses and coaches.

No date has yet been announced for the debate.
