‘Nothing to fear’: NI regulator

Northern Ireland’s new transport regulator has told hauliers in the province they have nothing to fear from her, provided they operate within the law.

Donna Knowles, who took over as head of the transport regulation unit (TRU) this month after Donald Armstrong stepped down, said her team based in Belfast, as well as staff at the central licensing office in Leeds, will continue to provide both guidance and advice to the industry.

However, she said: “I will have no hesitation in using the powers within the legislation to suspend, curtail or revoke O-licences where the standards of good repute, professional competence, establishment or appropriate financial standing are not adhered to by operators. Hauliers have nothing to fear if they operate within the regulations.”

Knowles previously worked at Queen’s University, the NI Office and the Department of Justice before joining the Department of the Environment.
