A lorry driver has been arrested following a multi-vehicle collision on the M26 in Kent, which left two people dead.

Police were called to the London-bound carriageway of the motorway near Kemsing at 9.37am on 16 April after two HGVs, two cars and a box van collided.

Two French nationals, one aged 22 and the other 16 died as a result.

Both sides of the motorway were closed while investigation work was carried out and traffic on the London-bound carriageway was redirected on to the M20.

The carriageway was fully reopened to new traffic more than 18 hours later.

Kent police said a 45-year-old HGV driver was in custody and was being questioned in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Matt Kendall said: “We appreciate that some members of the public were inconvenienced for some time but, in light of the tragic circumstances of the incident, we had a duty to conduct a thorough and detailed investigation at the scene.

“We are continuing to appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events prior to the collision, to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit urgently on 01622 798538.”

In addition to the two fatalities, a further seven people were taken to hospitals in London for treatment.
