Owner driver Richard Dover passes away

Richard Dover, the Cumbria-based owner-driver who was looking to get back on the road after an accident left him paralysed from the waist down, has passed away. He was 59.

In 2008 he slipped off a bulk tanker trailer, damaging his spinal cord and losing the use of his legs. At the time of the accident, he was running two trucks and had been an owner-driver since 1982 when he set up Richard Dover Transport, based in Workington.

He spent more than a year recovering from the accident and was determined to get back on the road. He took inspiration from two other disabled truck drivers – Brian Rigg and Stephen Davidson.

Speaking to CM (CM 8 April 2010), he said: “They visited me in hospital and helped to get me motivated.”

He subsequently worked closely with the Volvo Trucks used truck department to try to realise his ambition. A spokesman for the manufacturer said: “It is extremely sad news, and our thoughts are with his family.”
