£12.6m Cosham Northern Road Bridge fully reopens

Hauliers delivering into Portsmouth should see a reduction in congestion after the completion of the £12.6m Northern Road Bridge last Thursday (10 April).

The new bridge on the A397 in Cosham is a major commuter route into the city between the M27 and the A3. It was built to replace the previous bridge, erected in 1927 to cross the London-Portsmouth railway line, upon the discovery during an inspection in 2005 that it was suffering from crumbling concrete and a weakening of its structure.

Work started on the new structure in September 2012, with it being partially opened to general traffic from June last year, but motorists have endured diversions, lane closures and speed restrictions while the construction has taken place.

Transport minister Baroness Kramer said: “We know the importance of strong transport links to local communities and businesses. That is why we have provided £11m for this important scheme.”

The total cost of the new bridge is £12.6m, with the Department for Transport contributing just over £11m towards the funding.
