The family of Maurice Hymas, who ran bulk tipper haulier Alfred Hymas for more than 40 years, has announced that he has passed away. He was 76.

Stewart Hymas, MD of the company, said his father suffered a heart-attack.

Maurice took over the business, started by his father Alfred Hymas in 1911, at the age of 19 in 1956 before retiring in 2002, aged 65.

Last year he collected the Personality of the Year Award at Tip-ex and was interviewed by Commercial Motor as part of our Heroes of Haulage series (CM 13 March 2014).

Looking back at his life in road transport, Maurice said: “Road transport has been good to me. We grew up in an area where there were several milling companies and quarries; we were in the right place at the right time.”

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, children Louise, Robert and Stewart, and five grandchildren.
