CV Show 2014: Goodyear proves eco tyres can save money

Goodyear will use its stand at the CV Show 2014 to promote the proven benefits of its KMax and FuelMax ranges launched in September.
The Goodyear KMAX has been developed for improved mileage performance, while not compromising on other important criteria such as fuel efficiency and traction. Likewise the Goodyear FUELMAX range is for the operator seeking to optimise fuel efficiency combined with good mileage. A key feature is the tyres’ light weight which saves fuel and increases payload.
Fleet operators are always looking to cut fuel bills but Goodyear admitted that many remain sceptical about the payback on fuel efficient tyres, which still carry a mileage penalty.
Marc Preedy, commercial director of Goodyear, said: “The Goodyear FuelMax tyre is a perfect example of our ability to decrease a fleet’s cost of ownership. The steer tyre was awarded an A-grade in fuel economy, the first in the market – an achievement we are very proud of. When you compare the amount you can save on fleet of 50 trucks that have the FuelMax tyre instead of a D-grade tyre you are looking at savings in excess of £200,000.”
Goodyear argues that the increased wear rate is more than outweighed by the fuel saving for many long haul operators, but said that low rolling resistance tyres to all axles is essential to reap the full benefits. Just fitting eco tyres to the drive axle will not work as half the fuel saving comes from the trailer tyres.
