CV Show 2014: Michelin exclusively previews Multi T

  • By Steve Hobson

Michelin is using the CV Show to preview its new 385/65 R 22.5 X Multi T trailer tyre – which will be officially launched this summer.
The 385/65 X Multi T is designed for national and regional operations and will enable fleets to drive even greater value from their tyres. It will offer improvements in longevity, grip and rolling resistance over the current XTE3 trailer tyre of the same size, which has been Michelin’s best-selling trailer fitment since its launch in 2007.
Sharn Samra, Michelin’s head of truck marketing in the UK and Ireland, said: “Being able to display the new 385/65 X Multi T at the CV Show is a major coup as it’s the first time this tyre will have been exhibited anywhere in the world. The 385/65 is the second most popular commercial vehicle tyre size sold domestically and accounts for approximately 16% of the market. We see huge potential for the X Multi T which will be a game-changer in terms of trailer tyre performance.”
Operators are already finding the XTE range helps reduce tyre costs. South Wales-based Inter-Haul Pallet Services took delivery of an SDC trailer two years ago fitted with 265/70 R 19.5 Michelin XTE2 tyres; they remained in service for 22 months on the third axle, whilst the tyres on the first and second axle are still in service after two years. In comparison, Inter-Haul reports the competitor tyres on its double-deck trailers last a maximum of 12 months.
Julian Larking, transport and procurement manager at Inter-Haul, said: “We’d previously been fitting cheaper tyres and we thought the mileage we were getting was pretty good, until we made comparisons with the Michelins.”
