Somerset agricultural haulier John Budge Haulage has been acquired by long-standing customer Wessex Grain for an undisclosed sum.

The grain supplier and storage company recently bought the business and assets of the Thorney-based haulier, including its fleet of five tractor units and five bulk trailers.

Wessex Grain MD Simon Wilcox said the grain merchant will continue to work with a number of other hauliers, but having its own fleet will ensure that transport is always available during the busy harvest season.

The business will be run as Budge Haulage Limited, a separate company to Wessex Grain.

Wilcox said: “We are very pleased with the acquisition as it ensures that the haulage fleet is retained within our sector. We feel there will be a real opportunity to further develop the business from its sound and established base.”

John Budge, who started the haulage business along with Vera Budge in 1981, said: “After so many years it was a difficult decision for us to decide to sell. However, we are very pleased that Wessex Grain is taking on the business and keeping all the drivers employed.”
