Changes to Dartford Crossing charges to come into force in October

Hauliers are likely to see an increase in Dartford Crossing charges this autumn, when a barrier-less charging scheme comes into force.

The free-flow charging scheme, which will see users pay the toll in a way similar to the London Congestion Charge, will become operational in October.

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said a price hike for operators will come in when the system is introduced, and is the second phase of the increases announced in 2012.

An exact date for the launch is yet to be confirmed. Construction work will shortly begin in preparation for the system to be introduced.

After the system is introduced, booths will be removed and a new road layout to increase capacity will be completed by spring 2015.

An artist’s impression of how the new layout may look (pictured) has also been revealed by the Highways Agency.

“The Dartford-Thurrock River Crossing is a vital transport link and the government is committed to reducing congestion at this crucial gateway both now and in the future,” a spokeswoman said.
