Industry welcomes the end of the tax disc

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) have welcomed moves to abolish the paper tax disc later this year.

From October, paper tax discs will be replaced by digital records and will no longer be issued or required to be displayed on vehicle windscreens, the DVLA confirmed recently. At the same time, vehicle tax will cease to be transferable to a new owner when a vehicle is sold.

A spokesman for the SMMT said it welcomed the move, as electronic checks on vehicles meant the current system was “unwarranted” and placed “unnecessary cost and time burden on owners, operators and retailers”.

RMIF senior operations manager Steve Latham added that while the new system would have little appreciable effect in terms of used vehicle sales, it would speed up final delivery to customers of new vehicles, stressing that since legislative changes last year preventing them from holding blank tax discs, dealers have faced delays of up to two weeks waiting for each vehicle’s tax disc to arrive.

“There won’t be any noticeable difference on used vehicles but on the new market, it will be much better,” he said.
