Transdek to launch short double-deck trailer for city centres

Transdek UK will be launching its Double Deck Urban Eco Trailer (DUET) at this year’s CV Show at the Birmingham NEC next month.

The loading specialist said it developed the new urban double-decker to meet a growing retailer demand for greater transport efficiencies on last-mile deliveries to city centres, driven in part by the re-emergence of smaller format local convenience stores.

Designed specifically to carry high load volumes in the urban environment, the DUET offers a claimed load footprint 200% that of a typical 18-tonne rigid.

The trailer incorporates a rear door closure, which permits the lowest possible height profile whilst providing safe kerbside offloading, as well as requiring a smaller turning circle than a rigid truck.

The 10.6m long DUET can be specified with a height between 4m and 4.3m, with a payload of 22-tonnes. It is compatible with low-profile double-deck lifts at DCs.

Transdek said the separate twin sliding rear doors provide: safer offloading for operators, eliminating potential incidents with pedestrians, cyclists or passing vehicles during road-side deliveries; a low height for easy access to restricted areas; and improved load security and temperature retention for each deck.

MD at Transdek, Mark Adams, said: “On the one hand, retailers want to target the relatively high transport costs into city centres; and on the other, there is increasing pressure on councils and transport operators to ease congestion, reduce emissions, and to restrict access for urban store deliveries.

“With our new DUET trailer, up to 100% more product can be carried per vehicle, effectively halving the number of deliveries, slashing transport costs and CO2 emissions by up to 50%.”
