The European Investment Bank has agreed to contribute £175m towards completing improvements to some of Scotland’s major trunk roads.

The £500m project will see the completion of the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh and increased capacity on the M73 and M74.

Transport Scotland said the scheme will complete the central Scotland motorway network once developed. It includes a new M8 between Baillieston and Newhouse, a new A8 between Baillieston and Eurocentral, widening the Raith Interchange on the M74 and increasing capacity on sections of the M8, M73 and M74.

European Investment Bank vice-president for UK and Ireland, Jonathan Taylor, said the project in turn reduce costs for operators through reduced travel times.

Scotland’s transport minister Keith Brown said: “This marks a significant milestone in the timeline of what is a major transport infrastructure project for Scotland. Not only will these works vastly improve connectivity across Scotland’s Central Belt, the project will deliver far reaching benefits to the wider Scottish economy.”
