Slovakian truck driver fined for ignoring Anglesey bridge closure

A Slovakian truck driver has been charged with careless driving after ignoring the closure of the Britannia Bridge in Anglesey, North Wales, last week.

Igor Kolarik’s HGV overturned in high winds on Wednesday 12 February, despite the bridge being closed to high-sided vehicles.

A spokeswoman for North Wales Police said the bridge was closed completely for over 12 hours following the incident, as the truck could not be recovered until the following morning.

The 51-year-old Slovakian truck driver was fined £355 and given nine penalty points after being charged with careless driving at Caernarfon Magistrates Court on Friday 14 February.

Chief inspector Darren Wareing of North Wales Police said: “The actions of Kolarik were both totally inconsiderate and potentially lethal and it was only luck that prevented any serious injury or worse.

“The weather and driving conditions we experienced on Wednesday were atrocious and during this time the primary focus of us all was to protect life and ensure everyone got home safely.

“In ignoring the warning signs he put his own and other’s lives at risk and his actions demonstrate the very real dangers of not heeding the advice given by the professionals.”
