A cyclist has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a lorry driver in Suffolk earlier this month.

The driver sustained a head injury and was knocked unconscious during the incident, which occurred in the village of Copdock, near Ipswich, on 4 February.

While travelling along Elm Lane, a narrow road in the village, the HGV driver pulled over to allow car that was coming from the opposite direction to pass.

The driver then attempted to flag down the cyclist who was coming up behind him, as he was concerned that he may not have seen the car.

According to Suffolk police, the cyclist then became verbally abusive, telling the driver that he should not be using the narrow road.

The 48-year-old lorry driver, got out of his cab to speak to the cyclist. On his return, the cyclist allegedly swung the cab door into the driver’s head, knocking him unconscious.

The driver then fell to the ground and the cyclist rode off.

When he came round, the driver continued with his journey, but later became unwell and was taken to Ipswich Hospital to be treated for concussion.

A 40-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of assault yesterday (Thursday 13 February).

He has been bailed to return to the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre on 14 March.
