M2 closed while engineers investigate giant crater

The M2 near Sittingbourne in Kent has been closed in both directions following the sudden emergence of a 15ft-deep hole in the central reservation.

Highways Agency (HA) engineers are on the scene to investigate the cause of the mysterious ditch between junctions 5 and 6, which measures approximately 5m by 2m.

The HA said it will reopen the motorway “when safe to do so”.

There are currently delays of 15 minutes eastbound and 30 minutes westbound in the area.

Traffic heading to and from Dover is advised to use the M20.

A clearly signed diversion is in place via the A249, the M20, the A20, the A252, and the A251.

Rural insurance specialist NFU Mutual has recently issued a warning to drivers on country roads, following the spate of heavy rain and flooding in the UK. The firm said that deep potholes on rural roads may be filled with water, therefore posing a hazard to unsuspecting motorists.

NFU added that the number of pothole-related claims between 2012 and 2013 had risen by 21%.
