M6 toll road traffic up 13%

Midland Expressway, the company that operates the M6 toll road, has said it is seeing an increase in the volume of traffic using the route.

On average the toll road saw nearly 42,000 total journeys daily between October and December 2013, a 13.1% year-on-year increase.

The company declined to say how many of these journeys were made by HGVs or vans.

However, compared to the four months before, there was a slight drop-off in traffic using the Coleshill to Cannock route. Between June and September there were nearly 45,000 journeys made on the road.

Thomas Fanning, CEO of Midland Expressway put the year-on-year increase down to increased interest from hauliers following a free trial for Road Haulage Association (RHA) members in July.

“Since the ending of the trial we have seen an increase in custom from existing customers, signed several new accounts and have concluded volume deal arrangements that were under negotiation,” said Fanning. “Traffic volumes are up by over 4,000 movements per week.”

Around 1,000 more journeys were made by trucks on the road every weekday in July, when over 370 operators signed up to the trial organised by the RHA, Fanning added.

The cost of using the road for both HGVs and vans is £11.
