Hero lorry drivers help police stop dangerous M6 driver

A car travelling the wrong way on the M6 was brought to a halt by motorway police with the help of HGV drivers last week (Thursday 23 January).

The Nissan Qashqai was spotted in the outside lane on the southbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 3 travelling northbound just before 11pm.

Several concerned motorists immediately alerted police who tracked the vehicle on CCTV while traffic officers sped to the scene.

Sergeant Dave Lonsdale, from the Central Motorway Police Group (CPMG), said: “It became apparent from the CCTV that HGV drivers on the northbound carriageway decided to match the speed of the offending vehicle, at between 20 and 30 miles per hour across all three lanes and repeatedly flashed their headlights to warn oncoming southbound traffic.”

This action worked, with southbound traffic avoiding the outside lane. Motorway police then approached the vehicle while carrying out a rolling road closure and brought it to a stop.

The driver, a 70-year-old man, was found to be in need of medical treatment and was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he remains in a stable condition.

The CPMG tweeted its thanks to HGV drivers for their quick-thinking actions on the day. “Vehicle was just spotted by West Mids traffic travelling wrong way on M6 south between J34. Excellent work by professional truck drivers.”
