Northamptonshire lorry park receives planning consent

A 200-space lorry park in Northamptonshire is finally available for interested parties to operate, five years after a report recommended the county desperately needed more to avoid a parking crisis.

The Rothwell truck park, adjacent to junction three of the A14, has planning consent granted for 204 HGV parking spaces, a fuel forecourt and an amenity building of 10,226ft².

Adam Wadlow, at commercial property adviser Barber Wadlow, said conditions attached to the planning process had slowed everything down.

But he added: “Lorry parks aren’t the most profitable things in the world, so getting an operator is not going to happen overnight. We have some interest, which we are looking at pursuing.”

In 2009 Northamptonshire County Council commissioned a report which found that at least three major truck stops were needed to accommodate HGVs and soon afterwards work began on the site in Rothwell.

Wadlow also said many drivers were unwilling to spend to stay in secure overnight parks and were choosing laybys instead: “And the police aren’t doing a lot about that. All of that may change if regulation comes in. It will only get more interesting as the need for more distribution increases and eventually trucks will be forced to park in lorry parks overnight.”

No specific price has been attached to the Rothwell site; Wadlow said it would consider all options.
