New CCTV training course gets Driver CPC approval

A tailored driver awareness training course using real CCTV footage from an operator’s own fleet has now been granted Driver CPC approval.

The course, offered by reVUE, involves sister firm VUE’s CCTV cameras being fitted to vehicles for several weeks.
Driver behaviour experts will then analyse and interpret the footage to help commercial vehicle drivers identify and  correct unsafe driving habits, as well as improve their overall driving.

“The pressures of driving in a city are different to those of driving on motorways, or driving tippers,” said Mel Mizen, business development manager at reVUE.

“So depending on the size of fleet and type of operation, we might have cameras in four or five vehicles from anywhere between two weeks and two months.”

Mizen added: “We then look at the film footage from that client and write the CPC course around what we see.”

The CCTV technology provided by VUE captures instances of excessive G-force, speed and heavy braking, as well as recording driver behaviour behind the wheel.

“A lot of operators are running out of ideas regarding Driver CPC courses; they seem to be recycling the same old stuff, drivers’ hours, tachographs, driver checks, and a bit of health and safety training.

“Our course aims to improve driver behaviour. If a company is considering fitting cameras, then it also gives a first-hand experience of how effective this technology can be,” added Mizen.

If an operator has vehicles going in and out of a busy city centre then the course will include an element of vulnerable road user awareness training.

The course is delivered at a client’s premises, and if an operator has lots of sites across the country in different types of locations “we can tailor the course to each specific depot”, said Mizen.
