Drivers that breach Doncaster weight limit will be prosecuted, say police

Police intend to prosecute truck drivers that breach a 7.5-tonne weight limit in Belton, near Doncaster, after receiving complaints about drivers ignoring the restriction.

More than 175 vehicles breached the weight limit on Westgate Road in December and Humberside Police has now written to local businesses to ask them to comply with the restriction or face prosecution.

The police will be working with the DVSA (formerly Vosa and the Driving Standards Agency) to enforce the restriction, and has now installed cameras on the route to record vehicle registration, type of vehicle and weight.

PC Barry Gardner said operators will either be given a fixed penalty notice or be asked to attend a court hearing if found to be ignoring the limit.

“I think it should be stressed that we have taken these measures as a result of repeat offending, despite our efforts to prevent the offending,” said Gardner. “Some goods vehicles do have legitimate access to this road; these vehicles will not of course be prosecuted.”
