Scottish motorway improvements to begin soon

Construction of  £415m in improvements to some of Scotland’s major trunk roads will begin soon, Transport Scotland has said.

Improvements to the M8, which links Glasgow with Edinburgh, will include a new motorway section between the two cities, a new dual carriageway between Baillieston and Newhouse, improvements to the Raith Interchange and widening sections of the road.

Sections of the M73 and M74 motorways will also be widened.

Transport minister Keith Brown said the new section of road is expected to boost the economy of central Scotland and reduce peak journey times by 18 minutes for operators using busy sections of the M8.

“The Scottish government is continuing to invest in our transport infrastructure and the improvements made by this project will have long-lasting benefits for people across the central belt and beyond,” Brown said.

In 2013, Transport Scotland said a trial of an increased speed limit for LGVs on the A9 will take place this year.
