Truck derogation spike could hit 8,000

It has been predicted that the UK heavy truck market will register between 6,000 and 8,000 Euro-5 vehicles under derogation in 2014.

Daf Trucks MD Ray Ashworth said that figure would be part of a 6-tonne-plus market estimated to reach 36,000 registrations in 2014.

In addition, he suggested that December’s registrations could rise to 6,000 – compared with a normal December total of just 1,000. That would lift UK registrations to more than 45,200 for 2013 compared with 38,576 in 2012.

While manufacturers remain tight-lipped about derogation plans, the rental market is one sector that has openly embraced it. Ryder said it has invested more than £25m in Euro-5 trucks to be supplied under derogation in 2014.

Ryder Europe vice-president and MD David Hunt told CM: “At some point, there is no choice, there is only Euro-6. But we still have choice, because we have available, and have ordered, more Euro-5 product.”

Hunt predicted that as many as 8,000 vehicles could be supplied under derogation in 2014.

Dawsonrentals planned to derogate more than 500 vehicles, but MD John Fletcher revealed that it has all but used up its derogated stock of tractors “and made a big dent on the rigids too” to meet increasing business.

Elddis Transport boss Nigel Cook told CM that he has purchased 10 Euro-5 vehicles that will be registered next
year under derogation (CM 7 November). These trucks will be on the road in Q1 next year.
