Foreign driver fined £900 for attempted tacho falsification

A foreign LGV driver was fined £900 for attempting to falsify tachograph records, after being stopped by Vosa in Essex last week.

The Portuguese driver, who was delivering a load of fruit and vegetables to the UK, was stopped by Vosa examiners in a routine operation on the M11 near Harlow on 13 December.

Vosa examiners found a magnet in the driver’s cab, which had been used to stop the tachograph from recording. The tacho showed that he was still on a break.

In addition to the fine, the driver was given a 45-hour prohibition and had to pay an £80 fee to get the impounded tractor unit released.

PC Al Cuthberson, of Essex Police’s Commercial Vehicle Unit, said: “This is an extremely dangerous practice as long hours mean tired drivers and tired drivers have killed or seriously injured other road users. Serious collisions involving tired drivers also cause travel disruption to the road network.”

The Portuguese operator the driver was working for sent another tractor unit to pick up the trailer of fresh produce.
