Turners looks to expand Suffolk site

Turners (Soham) is hoping to expand its Suffolk head office as it looks to meet customers’ demands.

The operator has applied to East Cambridgeshire District Council for permission to extend its Newmarket site, including more chilled and sub-zero storage capacity and a larger packing area, mainly for citrus goods.

It also plans to begin work on a lorry park at the site in mid-2014 after the development was given the green light in 2011.

The company now hopes to build a new packing facility to help meet a customer’s requirement for more space and quality control, as well as facilities such as locker rooms for staff.

Turners also hopes to extend its frozen storage building to provide additional space for citrus packing, while allowing it to diversify its packing business by providing more space for different temperatures.

If the application is approved, Turners will increase its total storage and distribution space on the site to 579,432ft², an increase of 124,979ft².

The operator said in a statement to the council: “It is envisaged that the construction of these two extensions will not only retain business, but will also provide additional employment to a further 50 people.”

A decision on the plans is expected to be reached in February.

MD Paul Day was unavailable for comment on the proposals.

In September the company bought Lewis Tankers.
