Ryder ready for Euro-6

Ryder has invested more than £25m in Euro-5 trucks to be supplied under derogation in 2014.

“We’re trying to give people choice,” Ryder Europe vice president and MD David Hunt told “At some point, there is no choice, there is only Euro-6, but we still have choice, because we have available, and have ordered more Euro-5 product.”

Ryder’s fleet will also benefit from several hundred new and refurbished trailers arriving in 2014.

Its preparations for Euro-6 have been thorough: it has demonstrators from Daf, Iveco and Mercedes-Benz, has sent a UK team to its US parent to see how trucks have fared there under EPA 10 (the US equivalent to Euro-6 that was introduced in 2010), and with Daimler’s support, Ryder technicians have compared an EPA 10 Freightliner with a Euro-6 Mercedes.

Hunt estimates that Ryder has invested more than £500,000 in upgrading its workshop diagnostics and that each technician has received an additional week and a half’s training (on top of their regular training) in order to service the new technology.

While some Ryder customers have shown some interest in Euro-6, “is anyone out there looking at purchasing? No, they’re not,” Hunt said.
