Network concept will drive our evolution, says Palletline MD

Palletline has come a long way since its launch, blazing a trail for the palletised distribution industry with a succession of innovations and service level benchmarks. Now the network is on the eve of perhaps the most significant phase in its two decade history – a transition period that is likely to completely redefine the business and how it is perceived by its customers and the wider industry.

PAPH9860Though renowned as an outspoken industry commentator, Managing Director Kevin Buchanan prefers to keep his cards close to his chest when it comes to the specific details of Palletline’s future. However, he has already dropped hints that the original innovator of palletised distribution is ready to reinvent the status quo once again.

“Palletline has undertaken a major business review and is currently finalising plans to launch significant changes to its service offering in 2014. The business will be building on existing strengths and new opportunities to increase its competitive advantage and increase market share,” confirms Buchanan.

“It’s important to realise that Palletline is first and foremost a network. We are made up of 68 members across 78 locations, with more than 6,000 vehicles and hundreds of thousands of sq ft in storage space – a combined size that rivals some of the biggest UK logistics operators. There is a considerable amount of value and expertise, not to mention assets and infrastructure, shared across the business. To us it’s a natural step to begin by leveraging what we already have to create something entirely new.”

Palletline today

While evolution is central to Palletline’s philosophy, Buchanan affirms it will never lose its core values and original commitment to cost-effective distribution – which is why the Palletline model continues to appeal to a broad range of business, from SMEs to globally recognised companies.

The network maintains its edge over the competition by continually innovating, investing in market leading technology and enhancing the customer experience. Palletline recently celebrated its ten year anniversary of working with a major supermarket chain; the introduction of the ‘Less Is More’ campaign last year continues to bring significant productivity improvements and cost reductions.

“The benefits of consolidated delivery speak for themselves,” says Kevin Buchanan, Managing Director, Palletline. “Imagine all your suppliers working together to share the load – and reduce the cost. Now combine that with consistent quality, efficiency and a sustainable business model. That’s what our ‘Less Is More’ service is all about.”

Combining traditional customer service values with advanced technology

Palletline’s service hinges on a commitment to quality and flexibility, which is proudly upheld by the network’s 68 member companies; carefully chosen from amongst the UK’s leading hauliers.

“Palletline is the only truly co-operative pallet network,” says Buchanan. “We are 100% shareholder owned by our member network and believe in an equitable model that drives profits back into the business for the good of our members. Our stringent vetting process ensures we only select the very best. As a result, every member is proud to be part of Palletline.”

Facebook-BannerTechnology sits at the heart of the Palletline network. From hand-held digital signature capture devices that provide customers with an instant proof of delivery to online booking portal enhancements, the network is on a constant quest to improve service levels and efficiency through the use of the latest available technology.

“Innovation influences everything we do,” says Buchanan. “Our continual investment in bespoke technology and service enhancements ensures our customers always receive the best possible service.”

Industry recognition

Palletline has longstanding tradition of award-winning performance, and has been a regular fixture at the prestigious Motor Transport Awards. This year Palletline added to its Network of the Year 2012 success with Team of the Year 2013 and Safety in Operation 2013 – while Palletline members Miniclipper Logistics and Treasure Transport came out top in the Partnership Award and Livery of the Year, respectively.

Palletline is also the first network to achieve the hat-trick of internationally recognised quality, safety and environmental accreditations – ISO9001, OHSAS18001 and ISO14001.

Investing in growth

Palletline’s efficient distribution model has provided the blueprint for growth despite tough times. The network is investing heavily in new infrastructure and talent to facilitate continued expansion. The new team – along with potential new premises – is all about “putting in place the foundation that will enable us to shape our future and sustain the robust performance throughout 2014 and beyond,” confirms Buchanan.
