‘Hidden’ director has O-licence application refused

A director of revoked business MSLG Haulage, who tried to get back into the industry by hiding his involvement in a new company, has had his O-licence application refused by traffic commissioner (TC) for Scotland Joan Aitken (pictured).

At an Edinburgh public inquiry in October, Marshall Purves appeared in relation to Broxburn Warehousing’s application to run nine vehicles and eight trailers. Purves had been a director of MSLG Haulage, which had its licence to operate vehicles revoked in 2012 after failing to satisfy the financial standing requirement.

Paperwork for the Broxburn Warehousing application, which was submitted to the Office of the TC and dated 21 May, declared Laura Douglas as its director. However, subsequent checks revealed she was not appointed to the role until 29 May. Records showed Purves had incorporated Broxburn Warehousing as its sole director, then later resigned.

Douglas admitted to the TC she had lied on the application form. The business had been given advice not to include Purves on the application as it would attract the scrutiny of the TC’s office. Refusing the licence application, the TC said: “The whole point of Purves not being on the application was to keep his name and involvement from my office.”
