Truck drivers banned for breaching hours

Traffic commissioner (TC) for Scotland Joan Aitken has handed bans to drivers at a Glasgow-based waste disposal firm after Vosa officers discovered breaches of hours at the business.

At a hearing in Edinburgh the TC was told that inspectors uncovered drivers’ hours offences at Dow Waste Management, including false records and exceeding 4.5 hours driving without taking the required break. The TC suspended two of the firm’s drivers from driving LGVs for three weeks in October, while a third driver was handed a 10-day suspension.

A traffic examiner from Vosa told the TC it had been difficult to obtain all the required documents from the company during her investigation.

TC Aitken said steps had been taken to improve compliance following the Vosa investigation. However, she concluded:  “These drivers working in waste and with skips do need to be alert – I have seen too many cases of accidents flowing from poor decision-making by skip drivers – and they need to be alert to other road users.”

The TC also ruled that the firm cannot expand its vehicle authorisation for 12 months, because of its failure to deal with the driver offending.
