Seven unemployed 18 to 23 year olds have completed a three-week work placement at Norbert Dentressangle’s (ND)Thorncliffe DC as part of The Prince’s Trust’s Get into Logistics scheme.

This is the third year ND has participated in the scheme, which aims to give young people who are work-ready, but lack vocational skills, the opportunity to gain practical training and experience with employers.

“This programme allows us to help young people learn new skills, develop their self-esteem, gain experience of working in logistics and, ultimately, to find work,” said Tony Middlebrook, senior operations manager at ND’s Thorncliffe DC.

During the course, ND trained the candidates in operational tasks, work policies, health and safety, and encouraged them to develop their social skills and increase their confidence.

Mat Holt, head of programmes, enterprise and awards at The Prince’s Trust, said: “There are more than one in four (28%) young people struggling to find work in Sheffield. Thanks to partners such as Norbert Dentressangle, we are able to offer young people expert training and vocational skills that will help them find employment in the logistics sector.”

Following the success of the programme, ND is in talks with The Prince’s Trust regarding the possibility of rolling out the scheme at a national level.

“This year’s delegates were taken on via our local recruitment agency as part of our peak recruitment campaign, providing the opportunity for them to develop and practice the skills required in the workplace,” said Middlebrook.

“We are creating about 600 seasonal roles at Thorncliffe to support the critical peak trading period, some of which may become permanent, to support strong organic growth in our retail operations,” he added.
