UK share of cross-channel traffic falls further

More than 80 per cent of the trucks travelling from the UK to the continent are now foreign registered, according to figures from the Department for Transport.

In the four quarters ending in the third quarter of 2013, 1.63 million foreign registered vehicles travelled from the UK to the continent compared with 332,000 UK registered.

In the four quarters ending Q3 2013, there were more Polish registered powered vehicles than any other country of vehicle registration (371,000 or 19 per cent).

Other foreign countries with a large number of powered goods vehicles were the Netherlands (199,000 or 10 per cent), Germany (132,000 or 7 per cent) and Romania (121,000 or 6 per cent).

The number of foreign registered vehicles making the journey has increase from 392,000 in 1993 to 1.63 million now.

In the four quarters ending Q3 2013, there were also 600,000 unaccompanied trailers making the journey.

Powered vehicles increased by nine per cent, whereas unaccompanied trailers increased by only two per cent, compared to the four quarters ending Q3 2012.

The department said total traffic was seven per cent higher than in the four quarters ending Q3 2012, but still ten per cent lower than the 2007 peak.
