Somerset lorry ban plans thrown out by council

North Somerset Council has rejected parish councillors’ calls for a lorry ban in Congresbury, near Weston-super-Mare, saying it recognises the need for trucks to use the town’s roads for high street deliveries.

Members of Congresbury Parish Council had called for a 7.5-tonne weight restriction to be put in place in Brinsea Road, one of the main routes into the town from the A38.

However the council said this would instead divert trucks onto more unsuitable roads in the area, rather than removing the problem.

A spokesman for North Somerset Council said: “Many of our local roads are rural in nature and their suitability for LGVs is often questionable, but freight movements are necessary in order to supply the shops and services that we all use.”

He added that although residents would “prefer if lorries would go elsewhere” it is unlikely that any restrictions would be put in place until significant improvements to routes around the area are made.
