Man charged after driver sustains life-changing injuries

A 40-year-old man has been charged after a courier driver sustained “life changing injuries” when his lorry was stolen in Essex.

David Fletcher received multiple injuries after attempting to prevent his vehicle being driven off by two men in Purfleet on 9 July.

Leonard Wilsher, 40 of The Fremnells, Basildon, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

Five other men who were arrested in connection with the investigation have been released on police bail until September 20.

Police have issued a photograph of Mr Fletcher’s Mercedes box lorry (pictured) in the hope that it will jog the memory of people in the area who may remember seeing it.

“I would be interested to hear from anyone who was in the area of Wood Avenue, the social club known locally as the Fondue Club or the Bowls Club and the recreational area in front of those buildings at the end of the cul-de-sac of Wood Avenue,” said DCI Lucy Robinson. “They may have seen something of assistance to us, a car or other small clue to help us.”
