Unite threatens sector-wide fuel-tanker strike

  • 28 February 2012
  • By Chris Druce

The Unite union is threatening a national strike that could potentially affect fuel retailing at household names such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, BP, Esso and Shell.

Following a series of individual strikes at Norbert Dentressangle and Wincanton, the union is now threatening pan-industry action with a ballot of 2,000 member drivers from across the petroleum delivery sector.

Unite wants to establish a sector forum for tanker drivers to agree industry-wide best practice on safety, training and terms and conditions, which it claims have come under sustained attack in recent years.

It plans to ballot more than 2,000 members, equating to around 90% of tanker drivers supplying petrol to UK forecourts.

Matt Draper, Unite national officer, says: “This is a clear case of a predatory industry putting its profits and greed before the wider well-being. This workforce is now saying enough is enough.”

Operators in Unite’s sights include Wincanton, DHL, Hoyer, BP, JW Suckling, Norbert Dentressangle and Turners (Soham).
