Meachers driver killed by trailer

A driver for Meachers Global Logistics has been crushed to death by a trailer while making a delivery to Tilbury docks, just three days after a crane driver at the port was killed.

Meachers says the driver was working for it through an agency and that the Southampton-based company is now helping the Health and Safety Executive with its investigation.

The HSE would only confirm it was investigating an incident that took place at the docks on 26 October.  However, it is believed that the driver, who was in his 60s, died while picking up a trailer load of paper. Meachers commercial director Gary Whittle declines to comment further until the HSE’s findings are published.

The accident followed an incident on 23 October in which a crane toppled over, killing its operator. This earlier incident prompted union Unite to say it would “leave no stone unturned” in its efforts to get answers to safety questions at the port.

A statement from the port following the driver’s death says: “Everyone at the Port of Tilbury is deeply saddened by the death of a colleague and our thoughts are with his family. An investigation is currently being undertaken by the HSE and the police. The Port is fully cooperating with the investigation. We continue to work closely with the police and the HSE officials and will facilitate any meeting request from HSE to meet with safety representatives as appropriate.”
