Nightline improves IT to handle greater volumes

  • 14 November 2011

Nightline is investing €200,000 (£172,000) on IT hardware to handle increased order volumes and ensure capacity for future growth.

The Dublin-based parcels firm says its Smartship IT system has been an integral part of the business’s success since its roll-out – “it’s no co-incidence that turnover has trebled since it was introduced in 2000” – but that upgrades are necessary to keep up with increasing volumes.

Nightline CEO John Tuohy says: “We’ve gone from handling 1,000 transactions each week to around 130,000 transactions per day, so we need IT which can cope with our current levels, but still with greater volumes.”

The bulk of the investment will be spent on servers at the company’s Dublin headquarters, as well as equipping Nightline’s drivers with hand-held terminals.

Tuohy adds that the upgrade work will all be up and running in advance of the expected surge in parcels volumes during the Christmas peak, and that customer service will not be affected in any way.

“Over the course of the last decade, we have spent more than €6m on creating and refining our IT infrastructure for the benefit of our clients and the company,” adds Tuohy
