Fowler Welch-Coolchain on course despite challenging market

The outlook for Fowler Welch-Coolchain is “encouraging” according to parent company Dart Group.

In its interim results statement, group chairman Philip Meeson says that while the marketplace for the logistics firm remains extremely challenging its national network and growing presence in the ambient food sector puts it in a good position to enjoy  future growth.

Meeson says the company plans to use its DC opened in Devon’s Newton Abbott in June to service Tesco Express stores as a springboard to build its business further in South-West England.

The operator says phase one of a new transport management system has now been installed at its Heywood hub, with roll-out across its entire network set to happen during 2012. The pay off from the upgraded IT will be greater visibility of resources and volumes.

In June, Fowler Welch-Coolchain revealed its  relocation to a 50,000 pallet capacity distribution centre in Heywood had been partly to blame on a £4.6m reduction in operating profit, although this is now said to be operating at break-even.

Last month Fowler Welch said it was expanding its Dutch operation by relocating from its Maasland facility to a larger site at Poeldijk in the southern Westland region of the Netherlands.
