Industry warned of Christmas drivers shortage

A driver agency is warning operators there may well be a shortage of agency staff during the peak Christmas period, as the lack of new blood entering the industry in recent years starts to bite.

Luton’s ADR Network says that despite the economic slowdown of recent months it still expects demand for drivers to peak in the coming weeks.

ADR MD Andrew Waldron says: “The industry continues to be undersupplied in terms of new entrants into the driver profession and there is a limited pool of agency drivers to relieve pressure during peak periods.

“Organisations that do not have a strategic level resourcing plan in place could well find that there are no resources available to them which could result in considerable supply chain problems.”

The  shortfall in youngsters choosing to enter the profession is being exacerbated by experienced drivers leaving the hard-pressed industry or – given that according to Skills for Logistics 41% of the workforce is already 45% or older – simply retiring.

Last month as the new Agency Worker Regulations came into force ADR went above-and-beyond the scope of the new EU rules by offering permanent contracts to all its HGV drivers. To date, 380 drivers have signed up to the permanent contract.
