Metro distributor ALD joins United Pallet Network

Associated Newspapers-owned ALD Logistics has joined the United Pallet Network (UPN) covering the SE, BR and some of the SW postcode.

The operator has taken on the BR postcode from Gravesend’s North Kent Distribution, which itself continues to operate the DA postcode for UPN.

ALD, which has a 32-strong fleet from 3.5-tonne box vans up to artics, distributes the Metro free paper for its parent company, predominantly in London and the Home Counties.

Glen Williams, transport manager at ALD, which also carries out work on a hire and reward basis, says: “The UPN work is complementary to our core business of newspaper distribution and fits in with our plans to expand.”

Williams says that with the fleet busiest at night delivering newspapers, pallet membership will allow it to make better use of the fleet during the typically quieter daytime.

The company, which has 110 staff, is looking to recruit a dedicated sales manager for its pallet work. Back in September is temporarily covered the ME, CT and TN postcodes for the pallet network after the demise of Elton Lane.

It is the second new starter in recent months at UPN, with Hampshire-based Southern Storage Transport joining in October.
