Skills for Logistics secures future funds

Skills for Logistics (SfL) has been granted almost £4m of funding, securing its future for the next two years.

Due to government changes, the grant-style funding that all Sector Skills Councils have previously operated under has been replaced by a fully contestable funding model.

SfL has successfully placed bids under the Employer Investment Fund for four pots of available funds and will receive funding of £3.95m for the period from April 2012 to March 2014.

SfL chief executive Dr Mick Jackson says: “It clearly indicates that the government recognises both the importance of logistics to the economy, and the vital role which skills development plays on improving business effectiveness”.

“Over the next two years we’ll work with the nine leading trade associations and employers, both large and small, to ensure that this funding is spent wisely to improve the professional image of logistics and the skills levels of the 2.2 million people who work within the industry.”

David Morton, SfL deputy chairman and strategic development director at Menzies Distribution, adds: “In logistics, there is a clear link between a thriving business and a skilled workforce. I hope that logistics operators across our sector will take full advantage of this special opportunity and develop the skills of their staff to the benefit of the individuals themselves and to the bottom line of their company.”
